Sunshine, then Rain on the Way!

WELL, RIGHT NOW, WE HAVE A VARIETY OF SUN AND CLOUDS AND TEMPERATURES IN THE LOWER TO MID 80S. TONIGHT,TEMPERATURES WILL FALL INTO THE LOWER 70S AND LOWER TO UPPER 60S IN THE NORMALLY COOLER SUBURBS. TOMORROW WILL BE THE PICK OF THE WEEKEND WITH TEMPERATURES IN THE LOW TO MID 80S WITH SUNSHINE AND INCREASING CLOUDS LATER IN THE DAY.

SUNDAY'S TEMPERATURES WILL DEPEND ON THE TIMING OF THE RAIN. THE NAM AND WRF MODELS ARE SUGGESTING RAIN AND CLOUDS THROUGHOUT THE DAY AND TEMPS ONLY GETTING INTO THE 70S WHILE GFS MODEL SUGGESTS THAT WE WILL DRY OUT IN THE AFTERNOON AND TEMPS WILL GET INTO THE MID 80S. SIMILARLY, ON WEDNESDAY, THE NAM AND WRF MODELS WERE PREDICTING WEDNESDAY TO BE CLOUDY AND RAINY THROUGHOUT THE DAY, BUT THE RAIN ENDED UP BEING DELAYED 8-12 HOURS, ALLOWING TEMPS TO GET INTO THE MID TO UPPER 80S. THE DIFFERENCE IN SUNDAY'S WEATHER WILL BE THAT THE TEMPS WILL DEPEND ON WHEN THE RAIN WRAPS UP, WHEREAS WEDNESDAY'S TEMPS DEPENDED ON WHEN THE RAIN STARTED. IN THE MEANTIME, WE WILL HAVE TO MONITOR THE FORECAST MODELS. DETAILS TO COME SOON....IN THE MEANTIME, MONITOR LOCAL MEDIA OUTLETS FOR THE LATEST UPDATES.

Rain & Relief for Now....But the Heat Will Return!

If you look on the radar now, some downpours are starting to arrive in parts of northwestern New Jersey heading east. If you see what is headed our way, it looks like a huge blow-up of storms that can bring gusty winds, heavy rain, and prompt severe thunderstorm watches and warnings. As a result, we have experienced a huge relief in the heat in the way of upper 70s to lower 80s, cloudy skies, and rain. The best chance of thunderstorms will continue throughout today, and the chance of storms diminish into tomorrow. Tomorrow will be sunny with some clouds, low humidity, and temperatures in the upper 80s to lower 90s.

Wednesday will also be very nice with temps once again in the mid to upper 80s with sunshine, low humidity, and temps in the mid to upper 80s. Thursday's weather will feature increasing humidity with temperatures in the upper 80s to even lower 90s with sun and clouds. Friday will be the day where we could get in the mid to upper 90s to even near 100 deg in spots like Newark. The humidity will be around which means heat indexes as high as 105 deg or higher, but that is not definite at this time. As a result, heat advisories will be probably issued. The heat will continue into Saturday and Sunday with temps in the lower 90s. Details to come on the heat.

HAVE A GREAT DAY AND KEEP THE UMBRELLAS HANDY!!!!!

Excessive Heat and Humidity on the Way!

Well, today is another hot one in our area! Our current temperatures are still in the lower 90s at this time, but the fortunate news is that the humidity has been falling throughout the day. Current heat indexes are into the mid 90s to upper 90s in spots with the higher humidity. We do have to point out the cold front in our area that has been sinking south throughout the day. As a result, storms could develop anytime, most likely south of I-78 or so in our area. Tonight will be a nicer night with temps into the low to mid 70s with the lowering humidity with the skies going mostly clear during the overnight hours.

Tomorrow will be most likely the nicest day of the week with the lowest humidity and the lowest temperatures, although most areas will still top out near 90 deg in areas like Newark. If areas like Newark do reach 90 deg tomorrow, you will still be continuing your heat wave. The lower dew points and temperatures will probably not be enough to bring significant heat relief....that may not happen until Sunday or Monday, but the GFS and EURO models still have to determine the day our heat wave will end, which will be discussed later in this blog post. For Wednesday night, the humidity will be increasing with temps only dropping to the mid 70s.

Thursday, the humidity will be increasing into the 70s as the worst of this heat wave rolls through our area, making the temperatures feel much warmer, possibly over 110 deg! As a result of a storm system passing through areas north of our region, we will have some clouds building. The heat and humidity will last through Friday, maybe even through Saturday depending on when the cold front arrives. For Thursday and Friday night, there is a possibility that the nighttime lows may have to be raised to around 80 deg, but those details are being worked out at this time. Nonetheless, it will be very uncomfortable at night with the lows so warm. Even heat indexes will remain in the mid to upper 80s all night, contributing to the uncomfortable heat.

The toughest part of this forecast will be when the heat will actually end. As I mentioned earlier, the day we forecast the heat will end will depend on the trend of the GFS and Euro models. At this time, the GFS model is quicker pushing the cold front through which would mean a quicker end to this heat wave, probably on Saturday. However, the EURO model has a slower solution on when this cold front will move through, which will probably be on Sunday according to the EURO model. It seems like we're leaning towards the EURO model more than the GFS, although we are in middle-ground with this forecast. Either way you slice it, it will be very warm this weekend, but how warm???? More details to come.

Thunderstorms and Big Heat Wave on the Way!

GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYONE!!!! WE HOPE THAT EVERYONE IS STAYING COOL DURING THIS HEAT AND HUMIDITY. TEMPERATURES ARE CURRENTLY IN THE UPPER 80S TO LOWER 90S IN MOST SPOTS AS OF 12 NOON, BUT WITH THE HUMIDITY, IT ACTUALLY FEELS LIKE WE'RE IN THE MIDDLE TO UPPER 90S TO EVEN 100 DEG. AT LEAST WE HAVE SUN AND CLOUDS AT THIS TIME, BUT ENJOY IT NOW SINCE WE WILL HAVE THE CHANCE FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS LATER AHEAD OF AN APPROACHING COLD FRONT FROM CANADA. THIS IS ACTUALLY THE SAME FRONT THAT BROUGHT THE THUNDERSTORMS TO CANADA THAT RESULTED IN THE STAGE COLLAPSE, INJURING SEVERAL PEOPLE AND 1 SERIOUSLY. FORTUNATELY, WE ARE NOT EXPECTING AN IMPACT QUITE LIKE THAT, BUT EXPECT THE POSSIBILITY OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS. AS THESE STORMS HAPPEN, WE WILL BE SURE TO KEEP YOU POSTED. OTHER THAN THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM POSSIBILITY, WE ALSO HAVE AIR QUALITY ALERTS ISSUED FOR AREAS DUE TO THE HEAT AND HUMIDITY DECREASING OUR AIR QUALITY, WHICH IS AT A CODE ORANGE WHICH MEANS THAT IT IS UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS AND THAT OZONE IS THE PRIMARY POLLUTANT.

NOW ON TO THE IMPENDING HEAT WAVE....AS YOU SEE ON THE MAP BELOW, THE CORE OF THE HEAT IS IN THE MIDWEST HEADING DOWN INTO AREAS LIKE TEXAS. IT IS JUST AMAZING WHAT KIND OF TEMPERATURES WE ARE SEEING IN MINNEAPOLIS IN THE MID TO UPPER 90S. EVEN KANSAS CITY AND OKLAHOMA CITY COULD TOP 100 DEG TODAY. THE JET STREAM WILL BE SHIFTING NORTH AND ALLOWING FOR A CLOCKWISE FLOW IN THE ATMOSPHERE, WHICH WILL ALLOW THE HEAT IN THE CENTER OF THE COUNTRY TO PUSH INTO OUR AREA ON THURSDAY, FRIDAY, AND EVEN SATURDAY. RELIEF SHOULD BE ARRIVING BY SUNDAY BUT MORE DETAILS WILL FOLLOW ON THIS POTENTIAL HEAT WAVE.
US: Weather Today

OTHER THAN THE HEAT AND THUNDERSTORMS, WE ARE ALSO MONITORING THE TROPICS AT THIS TIME. THE ONLY NAMED STORM IN OUR AREA IS TROPICAL STORM BRET, WHICH HAS WINDS AT 50 MPH AND CHURNING OFF FLORIDA'S EAST COAST, THEREFORE INCREASING THE WAVE HEIGHTS IN THOSE AREAS. FOR THE LATEST ON BRET, VISIT OUR TROPICAL STORM PAGE ON THIS BLOG OR VISIT THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER WEBSITE.

HAVE A GREAT DAY, STAY COOL, AND WATCH OUT FOR THUNDERSTORMS!!!!!!!

Beach Tips

Many of you are hitting the beaches this summer to beat the heat, and since there have been rip current threats and there will be threats at our local beaches, here are some safety tips to keep you safe and alive throughout the summer from the National Weather Service....

Never Swim Alone, Always Swim at Beaches with Lifeguards!

four young adults running at edge of beachTalk with the Lifeguard Before Entering the Ocean, Great Lakes, or Gulf of Mexico. The lifeguard is familiar with the beach and can tell you where the safest places are to swim.Watch our short video on how to escape the rip!

Know How To Swim! Swimming in a pool is NOT the same as swimming at a surf beach with crashing waves, winds and currents that can change suddenly.

bullet of woman swimmingSwimming in currents and waves is much more difficult than swimming in a pool. The conditions of the currents and waves can change quickly unlike in a pool where there is consistency. Swimming in currents and waves will also cause fatigue more quickly than swimming in a pool. Smooth water located between breaking waves could signal the presence of a rip current. Ask the lifeguard about the use of a United States Coast Guard approved flotation device. Further, your body will cool quickly while in the water.

Limit your time in the water and get out if you start to feel cold. Your body will cool quickly in the water.
beach flags, see bullets for textKnow the meaning of and obey warnings represented by colored beach flags. Different beaches may use different colors but a commonly used series include:
  • Double Red: Beach is closed to the public
  • Single Red: high hazard, e.g., strong surf or currents
  • Yellow: medium hazard
  • Green: Calm conditions although caution is still necessary
  • Purple: Flown with either Red or Yellow: Dangerous marine life, but not sharks.

Tips for Preventing Heat-Related Illnesses

Due to the impending heat forecasted for our area, here are some tips to prevent heat-related illnesses.....

The best defense is prevention. Here are some prevention tips:

  • Photo of athlete drinking water.Drink more fluids (nonalcoholic), regardless of your activity level. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink. Warning: If your doctor generally limits the amount of fluid you drink or has you on water pills, ask him how much you should drink while the weather is hot.
  • Don’t drink liquids that contain alcohol or large amounts of sugar–these actually cause you to lose more body fluid. Also, avoid very cold drinks, because they can cause stomach cramps.

  • Stay indoors and, if at all possible, stay in an air-conditioned place. If your home does not have air conditioning, go to the shopping mall or public library–even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat. Call your local health department to see if there are any heat-relief shelters in your area.

  • Electric fans may provide comfort, but when the temperature is in the high 90s, fans will not prevent heat-related illness. Taking a cool shower or bath, or moving to an air-conditioned place is a much better way to cool off.

  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.

  • NEVER leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle.

  • Although any one at any time can suffer from heat-related illness, some people are at greater risk than others. Check regularly on:

    • Infants and young children
    • People aged 65 or older
    • People who have a mental illness
    • Those who are physically ill, especially with heart disease or high blood pressure

  • Visit adults at risk at least twice a day and closely watch them for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Infants and young children, of course, need much more frequent watching.

If you must be out in the heat:

  • Photo of woman relaxing in the shade.Limit your outdoor activity to morning and evening hours.

  • Cut down on exercise. If you must exercise, drink two to four glasses of cool, nonalcoholic fluids each hour.  A sports beverage can replace the salt and minerals you lose in sweat. Warning: If you are on a low-salt diet, talk with your doctor before drinking a sports beverage. Remember the warning in the first “tip” (above), too.

  • Try to rest often in shady areas.

  • Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat (also keeps you cooler) and sunglasses and by putting on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher (the most effective products say “broad spectrum” or “UVA/UVB protection” on their labels).
This information provided by NCEH's Health Studies Branch.

Heat, Thunderstorms, Sunshine

Today was another hot day for our area. Temperatures got into the 90s today (91 deg in Central Park and 96 deg in Newark). Heat indexes are near 100 deg in some spots right now as the humidity increases and we have the heating of the day from the sunshine in our area today.

Right now, we have some cloud-cover building associated with a line of thunderstorms currently located in southwestern Pennsylvania. For tonight, we will continue to see some clouds with a chance of thunderstorms increasing with the best chance of thunderstorms around 2am, an unusual time for thunderstorms to develop in our area. Night-time low temperatures will be in the low to mid 70s. Now on to the heat.....Tomorrow will be the hottest day this week with temperatures in the mid to upper 90s in some spots. Areas like Newark are currently forecasted to reach 101 degrees with heat indexes of 107 or 108 degrees. We currently have a heat advisory in effect for areas like Bergen, Essex, Passaic, Hudson, and Union Counties as well as the five boroughs in NYC. This advisory will expire at 4:30am EDT. Then, another heat advisory will be issued for our area going into effect at 12pm expiring at 9pm EDT tomorrow. We will have plenty of sunshine which will not help the heat since the UV Index will have a value of 9, which means you can get a sun burn within less than a 1/2 hour. There will be a very low chance of precip. Currently, for Tuesday, the chance of rain will be about 20%. The rip current risk tomorrow will be moderate to high, so be careful! IF YOU GET CAUGHT IN A RIP CURRENT, SWIM PARALLEL TO THE SHORE AWAY FROM THE RIP AND THEN SWIM TO SHORE. Other things to be mindful of are the recent sightings of syringes washing up on some beaches as well as the recent shark sightings.

Wednesday will be much nicer with temperatures still in the upper 80s to near 90 deg with plenty of sunshine with a UV Index value of 9....so don't forget to apply the sunscreen! Thursday and Friday will be cooler with temps in the low to mid 80s and plenty of sunshine! More details to follow in the near-future.

HAVE A GREAT DAY!

Urban and Small Stream Flooding Advisory

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MOUNT HOLLY NJ HAS ISSUED AN URBAN AND SMALL STREAM FLOOD ADVISORY FOR... WARREN COUNTY IN NORTHWEST NEW JERSEY... NORTHAMPTON COUNTY IN EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA UNTIL 700 PM EDT.  AT 355 PM EDT, NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR CONTINUED TO INDICATE SLOW MOVING THUNDERSTORMS WITH HEAVY RAIN IN NORTHAMPTON COUNTY AND WARREN COUNTY. THE THUNDERSTORMS ARE CAPABLE OF PRODUCING AN INCH OR TWO OF RAIN IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME AT SOME LOCATIONS. THE HEAVY RAINFALL MAY RESULT IN FLOODING IN AREAS OF POOR DRAINAGE AND ALONG SMALL STREAMS.

Sunday Storms, Nice 4th of July!

Well, yesterday was probably one of the best days of the 4th of July weekend....temps at or near 90 deg, plenty of sunshine, and low humidity. Today is a different story, though. Currently, it is very humid as a warm front is moving through our area which is causing some downpours as well as thunderstorms. The downpours in our area have actually prompted flood advisories, one for Sullivan County which expires at 10:45am EDT, and for Ulster County which expires at 1:15pm EDT. When the cold front approaches however, we will probably see severe thunderstorms watches or warnings issued for some areas. The warm front should push through our area within the next couple of hours and the chance of precip will drastically drop as we approach the afternoon hours and once again increase later in the day as the cold front approaches. There will still be clouds, but temperatures should be able to increase into the low 80s ahead of the cold front if we are lucky in some areas. Our UV index will only be moderate at a value of 4 due to all of the cloud cover.

The cold front is still hung up in the Great Lakes at this time. This is the same front that caused powerful thunderstorms and dangerous lightning in areas like Minneapolis and Chicago. Fortunately, our thunderstorms should not be severe in that magnitude. However, we can't rule out the possibly for some thunderstorms to be severe as the humidity levels are high. Remember to check the local media outlets for updates as these storms pass through our area!

For our 4th of July, our skies should clear and the sunshine will return, so it'll be a great beach day for many areas. However, there is an outside chance of a scattered shower or thunderstorm although the chance of rain currently stands at 20%. Temperatures will be similar to Saturday with upper 80s to near 90 deg for many spots, with lower 80s in our normally cooler spots. Our UV index value will be at a value of 9 which means you will definitely need the sunscreen! For the latest in severe weather advisories, check back on this blog or visit this link: http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/severeweather?pt=local. Enjoy the rest of your 4th of July weekend!!!!!!

4th of July Weekend Forecast

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE!!!!!

LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR 4TH OF JULY WEEKEND???? WELL, WE HAVE THE COMPLETE FORECAST FOR THIS HOLIDAY WEEKEND.

Today will be another spectacular day with plenty of sunshine, highs in the low to mid 80s, and dew-points in the low to mid 50s. However, I must point out that with a low pressure system still located near Nova Scotia, and an upper-level trough axis still carved out over eastern Canada and much of New England... The interaction between the daytime heating and some colder than normal air aloft may generate enough instability to cause a pop-up shower or thunderstorm in areas north and east of the City this afternoon. Our UV Index will be standing at 10 today, which is very high. Be ready to have the sunscreen today as you start your holiday travel.

Tomorrow will actually be one of the best days of the 4th of July weekend. Temperatures will be in the mid to upper 80s with some thermometers reaching 90 deg. The chance of precip will be only around 10%. There will be plenty of sunshine with a UV index of 10 once again....so don't forget the sunscreen!

Sunday will feature a better chance of thunderstorms in our viewing area. The chance of precip will generally be between 40-60%. There will be sunshine, however with a UV index of 9, so even with the chance of thunderstorms, you will still need the sunscreen. We have adjusted Sunday's forecast somewhat. It now looks like on the models between yesterday and today, the chance of seeing a severe storm should be higher. We could see drenching downpours, wind gusts reaching 50 mph, and maybe even some small hail. We will have the key ingredients to fuel thunderstorms.....an approaching cold front, hot and humid temperatures, and the vigorous jet stream dynamics associated with the cold front.

The 4th of July Forecast has also been adjusted somewhat like Sunday's was. We're now thinking the timing previously mentioned on some of these storms could be too fast. The front could be potentially 6-12 hours slower than originally forecasted. If that happens, some areas could still encounter scattered thunderstorms for the 4th of July. Otherwise, we will have sunshine with temperatures in the upper 80s to 90 deg. We will have a UV index of 10, so just like all the other days of the holiday weekend, bring the sunscreen! More details to come in the near-future.

HAVE A GREAT 4TH OF JULY WEEKEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Picture Perfect Weather Today!

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE!!!!!

THE SUN IS SHINING TODAY FOR SURE!!!!! TEMPERATURES ARE CURRENTLY STANDING IN THE MID TO UPPER 70S IN OUR VIEWING AREAS, WITH COOLER NUMBERS IN THE NORTHERN SUBURBS. THE WEATHER WILL BE EVERYTHING YOU WANT IT TO BE....LOW HUMIDITY, PLENTY OF SUNSHINE (UV INDEX AT A 9 TODAY), AND HIGHS IN THE LOW TO MID 80S. WHILE YOU WON'T NEED THE UMBRELLA TODAY, YOU WILL NEED THE SUNSCREEN!

TOMORROW WILL BE ANOTHER SPECTACULAR DAY TO BEGIN JULY WITH HIGHS ONCE AGAIN IN THE LOW TO MID 80S. EVEN SATURDAY WILL FEATURE PLENTY OF SUNSHINE BUT INCREASING TEMPERATURES AND HUMIDITY. HIGHS WILL BE IN THE UPPER 80S TO NEAR 90 DEG IN SPOTS. HOWEVER, WITH THE INCREASING HUMIDITY, THERE WILL BE A CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS ON SATURDAY, MAINLY DURING THE NIGHTTIME HOURS, ESPECIALLY GETTING INTO SUNDAY.

ON SUNDAY, WE COULD SEE THUNDERSTORMS TO START THE DAY AND ALSO TO END THE DAY. DUE TO THE EXPECTED CLOUD COVER, WE DROPPED TEMPERATURES TO THE UPPER 80S. OUR 4TH OF JULY SHOULD BE NEAR OR EXCEEDING 90 DEG WITH SUNSHINE AND AN OUTSIDE CHANCE OF AN ISOLATED THUNDERSTORM WITH THE HEATING OF THE DAY. MORE DETAILS TO COME!!!!

HAVE A GREAT DAY!
